During the safari, you will stay at three unique camps: Horizon Lodge, Camp Davidson, and one of Bellevue’s two lodges – Savannah or Syringa.
Horizon Lodge (5 nights)
The standard accommodation at Horizon Lodge is the Luxury Garden Chalets. These double rooms are separate from the main lodge: three suites overlook the lake and feature a small verandah, while the rondavels are traditional African dwellings adjacent to the lodge. All rooms have en suite bathrooms with either a shower, a bathtub, or both. There are also two double rooms in the main lodge – the Standard Rooms – each with a private bathroom and shower.
For guests’ comfort, the lodge offers a spacious living room, a dining area, and a large verandah. Three excellent meals are served daily, with afternoon tea before the ride. All drinks are included, and special dietary requirements are happily catered for.The lodge also features a swimming pool by the lake.
Both the Luxury Garden Chalets and the Standard Rooms can be booked as single rooms, subject to availability.
Camp Davidson (1 night)
Camp Davidson is inspired by the old outspan camps of E.A. Davidson (great-grandfather of Dr Rupert Baber, one of the founders of Horizon Horseback), who in the early 1900s traveled through the region by wagon, selling goods along the way. Horizon has recreated that early camp atmosphere at Camp Davidson. Beautiful canvas tents on wooden decks are nestled among sandstone ridges with views over Horizon’s reserve. Each tent has its own bathroom with a shower. The camp is fully powered by solar energy and features a swimming pool with a deck. Wi-Fi is available in some of the tents as well as in the main tent.
Bellevue Lodge (1 night)

The itinerary serves as a guideline. Changes may occur due to wildlife movements, weather conditions, or other unforeseen circumstances. Any adjustments are always made with safety and the quality of the safari experience in mind.
Just a three-hour drive north of Johannesburg lies the Waterberg – a dramatic yet unspoiled region still largely undiscovered by international travelers. The landscape is defined by mountain plateaus, deep gorges, rolling savannahs, and a mosaic of rivers, wetlands, and forests. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the area is renowned for its biodiversity and rich cultural history. Archaeological finds here reveal traces of human life dating back several million years.
The Waterberg offers a unique combination of breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife. Giraffe, buffalo, antelope, and zebra roam freely, while the more elusive species – leopard, brown hyena, and rare antelopes such as roan and sable – may reveal themselves to the fortunate. Birdlife is equally remarkable, with more than 350 species, from eagles soaring above the cliffs to brightly colored small birds flitting through the dense bush.
The region is known for its seclusion and tranquility – a place untouched by mass tourism. Here you’ll find family-run lodges, horseback and hiking trails, and safaris that often feel more personal and intimate than in the country’s larger national parks. At the same time, the Waterberg is malaria-free, making it a safe and convenient destination for families and first-time visitors.
A journey to the Waterberg is to experience another side of South Africa – wild, beautiful, and deeply authentic. A place where the horizon seems endless, sunsets blaze in gold and crimson, and the sounds of the bush lull you to sleep beneath a star-filled sky.
