A fantastic and varied safari in every way. Galloping across the plains alongside zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, and kudu is something truly unique. The highlight was the ride to Seringa, an incredibly beautiful lodge with a magical view over the African plains.

About

This seven-night riding safari takes you into one of South Africa’s most captivating regions – the vast and diverse Waterberg. More than just a horseback holiday, the Signature Safari is an experience filled with adventure, camaraderie, and unforgettable encounters with nature and wildlife.

Created for riders who love spending long hours in the saddle, the safari showcases the freedom of riding across constantly changing landscapes. From rolling savannahs and wide-open plains to rocky ridges, wetlands, and forested valleys – every day brings something new. Expect exhilarating gallops, natural cross-country obstacles, and refreshing splashes through rivers and streams. Along the way you might try your hand at polocrosse, swim bareback with the horses, or ride out to spectacular viewpoints for sundowners.

Wildlife is abundant throughout the area. You will ride alongside zebra, giraffe, and antelope, with the chance of spotting rarer species such as sable and nyala. While big predators and elephants are not part of the horseback experience, there is the option to add a traditional Big Five game drive in a nearby reserve – where elephant, rhino, and even big cats may appear.

Accommodation on the safari is as varied as the terrain. Six nights are spent at the beautiful Horizon Lodge on the edge of a tranquil lake, one night glamping at Camp Davidson on a secluded ridge in the bush, and one night at one of the distinctive lodges overlooking the Bellevue plains. Each has its own charm and atmosphere, creating a journey full of contrasts.

With expert guiding, breathtaking scenery, and horses to match every rider, the Signature Safari is an equestrian adventure at its very best – the perfect blend of wilderness, excitement, and pure riding joy.

Accommodation

During the safari, you will stay at three unique camps: Horizon Lodge, Camp Davidson, and one of Bellevue’s two lodges – Savannah or Syringa.

Horizon Lodge (5 nights)

The standard accommodation at Horizon Lodge is the Luxury Garden Chalets. These double rooms are separate from the main lodge: three suites overlook the lake and feature a small verandah, while the rondavels are traditional African dwellings adjacent to the lodge. All rooms have en suite bathrooms with either a shower, a bathtub, or both. There are also two double rooms in the main lodge – the Standard Rooms – each with a private bathroom and shower.

For guests’ comfort, the lodge offers a spacious living room, a dining area, and a large verandah. Three excellent meals are served daily, with afternoon tea before the ride. All drinks are included, and special dietary requirements are happily catered for.The lodge also features a swimming pool by the lake.

Both the Luxury Garden Chalets and the Standard Rooms can be booked as single rooms, subject to availability.

Camp Davidson (1 night)

Camp Davidson is inspired by the old outspan camps of E.A. Davidson (great-grandfather of Dr Rupert Baber, one of the founders of Horizon Horseback), who in the early 1900s traveled through the region by wagon, selling goods along the way. Horizon has recreated that early camp atmosphere at Camp Davidson. Beautiful canvas tents on wooden decks are nestled among sandstone ridges with views over Horizon’s reserve. Each tent has its own bathroom with a shower. The camp is fully powered by solar energy and features a swimming pool with a deck. Wi-Fi is available in some of the tents as well as in the main tent.

Bellevue Lodge (1 night)

The Bellevue reserve has two different lodges – Savannah and Syringa – and you will spend one night at one of them, most often at Savannah. Both lodges are beautifully decorated, offering spacious and comfortable common areas as well as dining spaces both indoors and outdoors.

Savannah

This lodge, where you will usually spend one night, is a true African bush lodge at its finest. Four rondavels, each with its own bathroom, are set on a shared wooden deck. Arranged in a half circle, they overlook the pool, the savannah, and the nearby waterhole that frequently attracts wildlife. The living areas flow naturally onto an elegant, thatched veranda in traditional style, leading out to the pool deck with the untouched wilderness as a backdrop.

At the lodge’s lookout point, you can settle in for an afternoon rest or pick up the binoculars and watch the wildlife unfold before your eyes.

Syringa
A charming lodge built in whitewashed stone, Syringa feels more like a private home than a hotel lodge. Stepping inside is like walking straight into someone’s living room – warm, welcoming, and personal. The lodge offers beautifully furnished double rooms and several stylish tiled bathrooms shared among guests. From the pool, which overlooks the savannah, you can enjoy the ever-present wildlife and the endless horizon. It’s not uncommon for ostriches to wander right up to the fence surrounding Syringa.

About Waterberg

About Waterberg

About Waterberg

Just a three-hour drive north of Johannesburg lies the Waterberg – a dramatic yet unspoiled region still largely undiscovered by international travelers. The landscape is defined by mountain plateaus, deep gorges, rolling savannahs, and a mosaic of rivers, wetlands, and forests. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the area is renowned for its biodiversity and rich cultural history. Archaeological finds here reveal traces of human life dating back several million years.

The Waterberg offers a unique combination of breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife. Giraffe, buffalo, antelope, and zebra roam freely, while the more elusive species – leopard, brown hyena, and rare antelopes such as roan and sable – may reveal themselves to the fortunate. Birdlife is equally remarkable, with more than 350 species, from eagles soaring above the cliffs to brightly colored small birds flitting through the dense bush.

The region is known for its seclusion and tranquility – a place untouched by mass tourism. Here you’ll find family-run lodges, horseback and hiking trails, and safaris that often feel more personal and intimate than in the country’s larger national parks. At the same time, the Waterberg is malaria-free, making it a safe and convenient destination for families and first-time visitors.

A journey to the Waterberg is to experience another side of South Africa – wild, beautiful, and deeply authentic. A place where the horizon seems endless, sunsets blaze in gold and crimson, and the sounds of the bush lull you to sleep beneath a star-filled sky.
