Are you travelling with someone who does not ride?

No problem. On the fixed departure dates (which you can find at the bottom), you can travel with companions who do not ride – they can instead enjoy game drives and bush walks, and you spend all the remaining time together.

Accommodation

Ant’s River Lodge is built around the river and the open landscape, with classic thatched roofs, natural materials and open spaces that blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors. The main building houses a lounge, bar and dining area beneath high vaulted ceilings, while a generous deck looks out over the Mokolo River and the surrounding plains where wildlife is constantly on the move. After long days in the saddle, there is plenty of space to unwind – in the shade of the veranda, by the pool overlooking the landscape, or in front of the fire in the boma in the evening. The atmosphere is relaxed yet considered, with the same personal hospitality for which Ant Africa are known. The lodge also has a spa overlooking the river, where treatments are offered for anyone wanting to relax even further – an unusual feature on this type of riding safari, and a clear complement to the experience in the saddle. The rooms at Ant’s River Lodge are spread out along the river, creating a calm and private feel with views over the Mokolo River from every veranda. Each room is detached and designed in a classic safari style, with natural materials, earthy tones and wooden and leather details. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms and can be configured as double or twin, with comfortable beds dressed in crisp linen. There is air conditioning for hot days and heated blankets for cooler nights, as well as facilities such as a minibar, tea and coffee-making facilities and a safe.

About Kaingo Game Reserve

Kaingo Game Reserve is a private reserve in the heart of South Africa’s Waterberg region in Limpopo Province, around 2.5 hours from Johannesburg. The reserve covers approximately 16,400 hectares of protected wilderness and is part of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve – the UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve known for its dramatic mountain landscapes, great biodiversity and unique geology. The landscape at Kaingo is characterised by classic Waterberg features, with red sandstone formations, open savannah, dense bushveld, river valleys and rolling mountain ridges. The area has been shaped by millions of years of erosion and contains both ecologically and archaeologically important environments. The reserve also lies within a so-called “Critical Biodiversity Area”, meaning that the area plays an important role in conserving the region’s ecosystems and species. Kaingo is run with a clear “conservation first” focus, with nature conservation and long-term sustainability at the centre. The reserve has a very low level of development and tourism, which contributes to the feeling of untouched and authentic wilderness. The wildlife in the area is rich and varied, with the chance to see elephants, rhinos, leopards, cheetahs, lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, kudu, nyala, impala and several other antelope species. The reserve is also home to a large number of bird species and a rich plant life that varies between different parts of the landscape. Research and conservation are a central part of Kaingo’s identity. Ongoing work is carried out here in biodiversity, ecology, climate impact and archaeology to increase understanding of Waterberg’s complex ecosystems and how the area can best be preserved for future generations. Through projects including leopard monitoring, elephant studies, habitat restoration and species reintroduction, the reserve actively works to protect and strengthen the local wildlife.
