Accommodation
The accommodation at Ant’s Hill is designed to provide both space, seclusion and a sense of being part of the landscape. The lodge is situated high and openly, with each room and cottage placed to maximize the view over the valley and the surrounding slopes. The architecture is airy and modern in form, but with materials and details that anchor everything in the African environment – natural stone, wood, thatch and large windows that let in light and nature. The rooms range from spacious double rooms to completely private cottages with their own pool, allowing couples, families, and smaller groups to find a suitable option. Regardless of the category, the feel is the same: generous space, thoughtful comfort, and privacy. Ant’s Hill can accommodate up to 16 guests at a time.

Programme, Ant's Hill
There is no typical day at Ant Africa. Sleep as long as you like, ride when you want, and take a break from the saddle whenever you feel like it. You decide if and when you want to ride, and besides horses, there is a wide range of other activities: bush walks, game drives, mountain biking, massages, lounging by the pool, fishing trips, and more. This makes Ant’s Hill a great base for families, couples, and groups where not everyone wants to ride every day – or perhaps not at all.
Game drives
Game drives provide you with the opportunity to cover larger areas of the reserve and see more of the over 40 species of mammals and 300 bird species found here. From giraffe and white rhino to sable antelope, buffalo, and zebra – there’s always something new to discover. The tour can be taken in the morning after breakfast or in the afternoon, concluding with sundowners at a viewpoint. In the evenings, you can join a night game drive and search for shyer species such as the brown hyena, aardvark, bushbaby, or porcupine. With a bit of luck, you may spot a leopard. Game drives can also be combined with a shorter bush walk to provide additional variation and better photo opportunities.
Bush walks
For guests who want to experience the reserve on foot, the guides offer informative bush walks that bring you close to the landscape. During the walk, you will learn to recognize tracks, behaviors, and differences between species – and sometimes you get very close to white rhinos in controlled conditions. The tours can range from a leisurely walk to a more active experience through hilly terrain. Regardless of the pace, it provides an immediate sense of sounds, scents, and details that are otherwise easy to miss.
Family safari
Children are warmly welcomed at Ant Africa Safaris and can be introduced to both riding and safari in a safe and fun way. There are ponies for both beginners and experienced children; younger children can be led by a guide, and riding lessons are offered if needed. Children under five can be led around on a pony in the lodge area. On bush walks, they learn about tracks, small creatures, and how animals live. They can join game drives, and when not out on adventures, activities such as archery, fishing, and pool time are available. Meals can be tailored for children, both in terms of timings and food. Children aged 11 and under must be accompanied by an adult during activities.
Mountain bike
For those who want to be more active, there are mountain bike trails through the varied terrain of the reserve. You often cycle parallel to the wildlife, and the routes range from shorter 5 km rides to more technical 20 km tracks.
Fishing
During the summer months, guests can accompany staff to one of the reserve's ponds to fish for bream and bass. It is a tranquil activity enjoyed by both children and adults, and works well as a break between riding sessions or game drives.
Trail running
For runners, there is an opportunity to venture into the bush together with a guide. Routes are tailored to the level, pace, and condition of the day, providing a completely different way to experience the terrain than from the saddle or a vehicle. A great option for those who want to stay active during their travels.
Non-riders
Ant Africa Safaris is just as suited for non-riders as it is for riders. Whether you want to walk, cycle, go on game drives, fish, train, swim, or just relax, there is a wide range of activities to choose from. No one needs to compromise to have a full safari experience.

About Ant Africa Game Reserve
Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill are located on Ant Africa Safaris’ private reserve in South Africa’s Waterberg region – one of the country’s most varied and biologically rich safari areas. The reserve covers around 12,500 acres of protected bushveld in Limpopo Province, about three hours north of Johannesburg, and offers a classic Waterberg setting with great variation in both scenery and wildlife. Waterberg is a UNESCO-protected biosphere reserve and is characterised by its red rock formations, gentle hills, open plains, ravines and dense savanna woodland. The landscape here differs from many other safari areas in southern Africa due to its hilly terrain and wide ecological diversity. The reserve comprises twelve distinct ecological zones – from open grasslands to dense bushveld – creating the conditions for unusually rich flora and fauna. The wildlife on the reserve is highly varied and includes over 40 species of large mammals. You may see giraffe, white rhinoceros, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, nyala, impala, waterbuck, eland, warthog and several other antelope species, as well as predators such as leopard, brown hyena, jackal, caracal, civet and genet. The area is also particularly known for its sable and roan antelope populations – two of South Africa’s most unusual and conservation-dependent antelope species, which are rarely seen in the country’s national parks. For birdwatchers, the area is also very interesting, with over 300 species of both resident and migratory birds. Waterberg as a region is known for its biodiversity and is regarded as the world’s only savanna biosphere reserve under UNESCO protection. Beyond its natural beauty, the area also has a rich history. Waterberg has been inhabited for thousands of years, and there are both archaeological remains and San rock paintings that bear witness to the region’s earliest inhabitants. The landscape still retains a sense of untouched wilderness and low levels of development, which makes the area particularly popular for horse riding safaris.
