About

Cantering side by side with a giraffe is an experience you will never forget. The sounds of the wilderness – fish eagles calling, the splash of water as a crocodile dives, or the echo of hooves across the plains – are the only things that break the silence as you explore the Okavango Delta on horseback. During Kujwana Delta Ride you will experience spectacular landscapes, knowledgeable guides, and outstanding bush accommodation — all with a level of safety that comes from three decades of experience. Your main base is Kujwana Camp, located in NG30, a luxury tented camp on the Xudum River with a pool, wooden decks, and views over the floodplain where zebras and giraffes often pass by. The camp offers Wi-Fi, relaxing spaces, and comfortable rooms with ensuite bathrooms. On request, you can also stay on raised platforms or in a secondary camp, where a more secluded and pared-back wilderness experience awaits.

The safari offers a variety of experiences: full-day rides through river landscapes and savannas, bush dinners, picnics on shady islands, and tranquil excursions in mokoro canoes. The horses are the heart of the safari – carefully selected for their temperament and suitability. The string includes Thoroughbreds, Arabs, Boerperds, and crossbreeds, many personally chosen from Zimbabwe and South Africa. When not out on safari, they roam freely across the grassy molapos – a sight that is unforgettable in itself. The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s most unique ecosystems — an inland delta that flows into Botswana’s arid Kalahari Desert. Here, open savannas, flooded grasslands, and palm-fringed islands form habitats for elephants, buffalo, hippos, lions, leopards, giraffes, and hundreds of bird species. Experiencing this untouched paradise from horseback offers an unparalleled closeness to nature.

Riverside Suites

The Riverside Suites are beautifully situated on the Xudum River – offering views of the river during the winter months, and in summer overlooking a waterhole where elephants often gather to cool down. From the veranda, you can watch elephants bathing and colorful kingfishers resting on the branches of ancient fig trees. Elegantly decorated and full of charm, these suites provide the perfect combination of luxury and wilderness. Here, you can fall asleep to the sound of hippos grazing below the veranda and wake up to a sunrise filling the room with warm light. The suites are especially appreciated by couples and honeymooners seeking a romantic and secluded experience with that little something extra.

Breeding herds of elephants enjoy the security of the forest, while zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo may also be found if the pans hold water. If conditions allow, you’ll even have the chance to swim your horse back into camp.

Horses and equipment

The care and dedication given to the more than 60 horses at Okavango Horse Safaris is a true testament to the team’s commitment. Horses are chosen first and foremost for their temperament and suitability. Many come from friends in Harare, Zimbabwe, or have been handpicked from well-known breeders in South Africa. The herd consists of Thoroughbreds and Thoroughbred crosses, Arabs and Arab crosses, as well as Boerperds. In recent years, carefully selected mares have also joined the team, and with the stallion Lamu, an American Saddlebred, the safari now breeds some of its own horses. All are well-schooled specifically for safari, highly responsive, and known for their steady temperaments. Okavango Horse Safaris always strives to match every rider with the perfect horse. Horse management and welfare at Okavango Horse Safaris are maintained to exceptionally high standards. Regular farrier visits, dental care, vaccinations, and deworming are all routine, as is ensuring that every piece of tack is fitted to each individual horse. When not out on safari, the horses enjoy rich and varied grazing and roam freely in the Delta’s surroundings — an unforgettable sight in itself. Two types of saddles are available: English saddles with seat savers for extra comfort, and South African trail saddles. The equipment is of high quality and carefully maintained. Saddles are sourced from renowned brands such as Ideals, Barnsby, and Symonds. Most horses are ridden in bridles with snaffle bits.

Riding, riding level and hours in the saddle

The Okavango Delta is often described as a water wilderness of palm islands, grassy floodplains, mopane forests, and clear waterways. The high-water season usually falls between May and September. During this period, many of the plains are flooded, and the horses wade from island to island. The terrain is generally good and firm along the island edges, allowing for riding in both trot and canter. The minimum riding level required for this safari is Level 4 (Experienced). Being fit and a confident rider is a great advantage. For participants who do not meet these requirements, there is a fantastic alternative program available for non-riders. Rides last between 4–6 hours per day, with breaks for refreshments — either as a picnic breakfast or lunch — as well as a 10-minute walk for every two hours spent in the saddle. These walks ease the strain on the rider by engaging different muscle groups while also giving the horses a rest from the constant pressure of the rider’s weight. We also welcome children on safari, but they must be strong and competent riders. To participate, they are required to present a certificate from a riding school or a qualified instructor confirming their ability. No price reductions apply for children, and the recommended minimum age is 12 years.

Guides and safety

Okavango Horse Safaris has an outstanding safety record, and safety is always the highest priority. All rides are led by experienced and fully qualified guides, licensed and trained in both firearms handling and first aid. There are always two guides on each ride — a lead guide and a backup guide. For additional security, a .375 rifle is always carried, and all staff receive regular refresher training in safety procedures. The guides have great respect for the wildlife and always adapt how close to ride depending on the situation and the guests’ own comfort levels. No risks are taken — wind direction, the horses’ behavior, and the movement of the herds are always carefully considered in decision-making. Upon arrival, guests are given a thorough introduction covering how the safari is conducted, how to behave when encountering wildlife, and the safety routines in place. In the unlikely event of an accident, all guests are registered with an emergency helicopter evacuation service (Okavango Air Rescue), which can transfer you to a hospital within 20 minutes. All camps and vehicles are equipped with radio communication, and guides always carry handheld radios while riding. This meticulous approach ensures that the safari is conducted as safely as possible.

In the Q/A section on this website, you will find guidance on what is generally recommended to bring on a riding safari. For the Kujwana Delta Ride specifically, the following applies: soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion are provided in camp, as well as bedding complete with sheets, duvet, and towels. A medical kit is also available. Power outlets are South African/Botswanan with three round pins, so make sure to bring a suitable adapter. A limited selection of short chaps is available to borrow, but we recommend bringing your own. You will also need to bring your own hard riding hat.

Laundry service

Laundry service is available and done on a daily basis at Base Camp (Kujwana), but not during a stay at the fly camp. All laundry is hand-washed by the camp staff.

The rainy season can start as early as October with sporadic thunderstorms, while December to February are the wettest months. Winter lasts from May until the end of August and is characterized by dry, sunny weather. Evenings and early mornings can be chilly, with temperatures starting at around 8°C, while daytime highs reach up to 24°C. Wildlife is abundant all year round, but from July onwards the withering tall grass makes animal sightings much easier.

Health Recommendations

It is always best to consult your doctor before traveling. The Okavango area is considered a low-risk malaria zone, but we recommend using plenty of insect repellent and covering your skin after sunset. Your doctor can also advise on possible malaria prophylaxis and ensure that your vaccinations are up to date, such as tetanus, hepatitis A, and, depending on your travel route, possibly yellow fever. Remember to drink plenty of water during the day to avoid dehydration in the heat, and be sure to bring any medication you may need. Please also inform us in advance of any allergies or special requirements.
