About Masai Mara

Masai Mara in south-western Kenya is one of Africa’s most iconic safari regions, stretching across wide-open savannahs with gently rolling landscapes, acacia trees and endless horizons. The reserve borders the Serengeti in Tanzania and together they form one of the world’s most significant wildlife ecosystems. The name “Mara” comes from the Maasai language and means roughly “spotted” – a reference to the landscape, where flat-topped acacia trees and bushes are scattered across the savannah like dark silhouettes. The area is home to the semi-nomadic Maasai people, whose history and presence remain a natural part of the region’s identity. Masai Mara is especially known for its exceptionally rich wildlife and is considered one of the best places in Africa to see large predators. There are excellent chances of spotting lions, leopards and cheetahs, as well as elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, topi, eland, impala and several other antelope species. Rhinos are also found in the area. Thanks to the vast open plains, visibility is often excellent, creating intense and dramatic encounters with wildlife. The area is also world-famous for the Great Migration, when enormous herds of wildebeest and zebras move between the Serengeti and Masai Mara in search of fresh grazing. During the migration, the animals cross crocodile-infested rivers in one of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomena. Today, Masai Mara consists not only of the national reserve itself but also of large surrounding conservancies and private areas, contributing to a varied and protected landscape with great biodiversity. The combination of open savannah, abundant wildlife and the classic East African atmosphere makes Masai Mara one of the continent’s most legendary safari destinations.
