Accommodation
On this safari, you will stay both at the beautiful, luxurious campsite of Zambian Horseback Safaris and at Chundukwa River Lodge.
Tented Campsite
Chundukwa River Lodge
Expansive open landscapes, starry nights, and the serene morning sounds of nature at dawn – the camp at Zambian Horseback Safaris truly embodies harmony between design, community, and nature – all alongside a magnificent view of the Simalaha Plains. The safari accommodates a maximum of eight riders, distributed across four tents. Special care has been taken with comfortable mattresses as well as quality linens and towels to provide the body with well-deserved recovery after long days in the saddle. Hot water is provided via an environmentally friendly so-called "rocket boiler," which heats water with a very small amount of firewood. Soap, shampoo, and conditioner are organic and environmentally friendly to avoid impacting the sensitive ecosystem of the floodplain. Here, guests are asked to use the provided products to help protect nature.

Programme, Simalaha Ride
The following itinerary outlines an 8-night, 9-day safari. The 5-night and 7-night options differ slightly – contact us if you would like to know more about these. The itinerary serves as a guide. Changes may occur due to animal movements, weather conditions, or other unforeseen circumstances. Any adjustments are always made with safety and the safari experience as the main focus.
Day 1
Chundukwa River Lodge
Welcome to Zambia! After you have passed through immigration control and collected your luggage, you will be met by a representative from the team for the transfer to Chundukwa River Lodge, which takes about 25 minutes by car. After checking in and having a light lunch on the terrace overlooking the river, you will board the lodge boat for a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River.
Day 2
Travel to Simalaha / Zambian Horseback Safaris
Wake up in time with the sun in your chalet by the Zambezi River. At the agreed time, we leave the lodge for the journey to Zambian Horseback Safaris. The journey begins with a roughly 40-minute drive to the small African port of Mambova. Here, you will be greeted by a bustle of local life – villagers and fishermen selling the day's catch, children playing, goats and chickens moving freely. The journey then continues by boat on Africa's fourth largest river – the mighty Zambezi. This boat trip is an adventure in itself and often a highlight of the trip. Along the way, you'll see hippos, crocodiles, local fishermen in their traditional dugout canoes (mokoros), livestock grazing along the banks, and distant village environments. After about two hours on the river, you will catch sight of the horses, saddled and waiting at the riverbank. Time for the first ride! Tonight's overnight stay is at Zambian Horseback Safaris in a luxurious safari tent.
Day 3
Full-day riding / Zambian Horseback Safaris
The days at Zambian Horseback Safaris begin before dawn. You choose tea or coffee and have a light breakfast before we set out on horseback in search of wildlife and experiences – we watch the sunrise from the saddle. We explore Simalaha Wilderness, an area of immense significance: about 180,000 km² of untouched wilderness. Here you will find vast plains, large gatherings of wildlife, mopane forests, ancient baobab trees, the life-giving Zambezi River, and the people who live here – the Lozi people, who move between riverbanks and villages, herding their cattle along the riverbeds and fishing for their families. Tonight's accommodation is also at Zambian Horseback Safaris in a luxurious safari tent.
Day 4
Full-day riding / Zambian Horseback Safaris
For riders, it’s a truly special feeling to be able to gallop across open landscapes without any predators or hidden holes in the ground. Here, you are encouraged to really take up space and experience the pure freedom of riding that Simalaha offers. Time feels slower – a perfect opportunity to disconnect from everyday life and be completely present in nature. Overnight stay at Zambian Horseback Safaris in a luxurious safari tent.
Day 5
Full-day riding / Zambian Horseback Safaris
Each day has its own character. The route is adjusted by Doug based on what is best for the group and where the wildlife is at the moment.
Day 6
Back to Chundukwa River Lodge
We enjoy one last morning on horseback across the plains, with the sunrise and wildlife, before the journey back to Livingstone begins. The journey first takes a boat back to Mambova and then by car to Chundukwa River Lodge. Here there's time to unwind – book a massage, relax by the pool, or stroll through the lodge's native gardens. Overnight stay at Chundukwa River Lodge in a luxurious Riverside Chalet or Chundu Cottage.
Day 7
Victoria Falls / Chundukwa River Lodge
After a good night's sleep and a lovely breakfast, the day is open to explore Livingstone and Victoria Falls. No fixed times, no waiting – you decide how long you want to explore the world's largest waterfall and its surroundings. Transport by car and driver/guide is included. There are many optional activities in the area. The driver takes you there, waits, and drives you back to the lodge. These activities are booked externally and paid for separately, or can be added to your itinerary. Overnight stay also tonight at Chundukwa River Lodge.
Day 8
Optional day trip to Chobe / Chundukwa River Lodge
Conclude your safari experience with a day trip to Chobe, where both land and water safaris bring you close to Botswana's rich wildlife. During the boat trip on the Chobe River, you will see brightly colored birds, hippos, and crocodiles along the banks. Keep an eye out for the world's largest elephant population, which often gathers here in large numbers. On land, the safari continues into the national park where lions, leopards, and other predators roam freely. The last evening and night are spent at Chundukwa River Lodge.
