Accommodation
On this safari, you will stay both at the beautiful, luxurious campsite of Zambian Horseback Safaris and at Chundukwa River Lodge.
Tented Campsite
Expansive open landscapes, starry nights, and the serene morning sounds of nature at dawn – the camp at Zambian Horseback Safaris truly embodies harmony between design, community, and nature – all alongside a magnificent view of the Simalaha Plains. The safari accommodates a maximum of eight riders, distributed across four tents. Special care has been taken with comfortable mattresses as well as quality linens and towels to provide the body with well-deserved recovery after long days in the saddle. Hot water is provided via an environmentally friendly so-called "rocket boiler," which heats water with a very small amount of firewood. Soap, shampoo, and conditioner are organic and environmentally friendly to avoid impacting the sensitive ecosystem of the floodplain. Here, guests are asked to use the provided products to help protect nature.
Chundukwa River Lodge
The accommodations at Chundukwa River Lodge are designed to blend in with the river and forest environment, offering a genuine eco-lodge experience. The chalets are constructed with minimal impact on the riverbank – reeds and trees have not been removed, allowing birds and wildlife like hippos and otters to move freely between land and water. The lodge is situated in the heart of nature, and it is not unusual to hear the hippos moving at night. This is a natural part of the experience and something many of our guests appreciate – a curious mindset and respect for the wild, tranquil environment that makes the place unique are encouraged. Built on stilts above the Zambezi River, each room offers its own sense of comfort and seclusion. All have en-suite bathrooms and can be furnished with either two single beds or one king-size bed. Two chalets are particularly well-suited for honeymooners, and one (Jacana River Chalet) is spacious enough to accommodate two extra beds for families wishing to stay together. All chalets have an open-plan layout at the front, and doors and windows are fitted with protective mosquito nets. Each room is equipped with mosquito nets, netted openings, and a private balcony overlooking the river and surrounding tree canopy. As part of Zambian Horseback Safaris' commitment to sustainable tourism, these Riverside Chalets do not have air conditioning. Chundukwa River Lodge was built by Doug together with local craftsmen. All building materials and furnishings are made in Zambia. From locally fired clay bricks, sustainably harvested reeds, Kalahari sand, to recycled wood and steel, to the work performed by weavers, thatchers, roofers, tailors, welders, and carpenters from nearby villages. They are built of timber, with thatched roofs and walls made from a traditional mix of Kalahari sand and cement. The interior is a thoughtfully curated combination of traditional patterned fabrics and local crafts. Some chalets have bathtubs indoors, while others have outdoor ones – perhaps you'll shower with a large tree for company or look up at the starry sky. The rooms are also equipped with • Ceiling fans for pleasant cooling • Electric blankets for chilly winter mornings (yes, Zambia can surprise) • Spacious mosquito nets for undisturbed sleep and insect repellent for extra comfort • Safes for personal belongings • Handcrafted bathrobes and slippers • Eco-friendly toiletries – as the lodge lies between the river and a system of lagoons, it is careful to protect the surrounding nature. Therefore, we offer organic shampoo, conditioner, and skin cream of high quality, gentle on both the skin and the environment. You are kindly requested to use these products during your stay.
